Roanoke’s Biomedical Institute Started with a Single Employee

15 years ago Michael Friedlander came from the largest medical center in the world, the Texas Medical Center, to one that didn’t yet exist. In that time, Michael and his team have built the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute to 45 faculty-led research teams dealing with cancer, neuroscience and cardiometabolic health.
Friedlander and his wife, Cindy, have created a culture that not only attracts individuals to come work in the Star City, but their families too. This family-style culture has been important in fueling the growth of the FBRI. However, the future of the FBRI is in the air as the Trump Administration looks to cut NIH finding. Though, local and state politicians doubt there will be any effect to this area.
