New Fralin Biomedical Research Institute investigator seeks molecular causes for deadly lung, heart diseases

Yassine Sassi joins the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, where he will be a faculty member in the research institute’s Center for Vascular and Heart Research, on Aug. 1.

Growing up in Tunisia, as a young boy Yassine Sassi wanted to be a scientist. He isn’t sure why. There were no scientists among his family, no friends with the same ambition.

But at 18 he left home for France to study biochemistry.

Two decades later, he’s on the leading edge of research into deadly pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. Sassi will join the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC as an assistant professor, where he will continue his research into pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis…the current treatments for these diseases only slow their progression.
